What Are Contact Lenses?
The contact lens is a revolutionary way of improving your sight without having to wear eyeglasses. Contact lenses sit directly on your eye, rather than in front of your eye, correcting the malformations in your natural lens that cause vision problems. You may also use contacts as a way of changing your eye color, with or without vision correction.
There are two main types of contact lenses, which include:
-
Soft contacts
Soft contacts are thin, flexible, disposable, and the most common type of contact lens. Soft contacts may help improve vision for both children and adults. -
Hard (gas-permeable) contacts
Hard contacts are more durable and less flexible than soft contacts, and they’re often the best choice for correcting difficult eye problems. These lenses are less expensive and allow a better flow of oxygen to your eye than soft contacts.
How do contact lenses correct my vision?
Contact lenses are comprised of a small, curved, thin material that floats on the tear film layer of your cornea. They serve the same purpose as eyeglasses to correct the way that light refracts off of your natural lens and helps your eyes focus.
Contacts come in different sizes and shapes, depending on the type of vision problems you have. As part of your contact lens examination, the team at the North Texas Center for Sight takes several measurements to determine the best type of contact lens for you.
What types of vision problems do contact lenses correct?
- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Astigmatism
- Keratoconus
- Dry eyes
- Presbyopia
